The Mississippi State University Ice Hockey team was founded in 2008 by a group of dedicated students with a love of hockey. Since its inception, the team has faced and overcame challenges both on and off the ice. The team is a non-varsity sport that just achieved club sport status at MSU. With students playing for the Ice Dawgs from as far away as Maine and Wisconsin, we have been able to bring a greater awareness of hockey here in Starkville and all over Mississippi. Our home game attendance at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo has averaged 2,500 spectators, with the highest being 3,500 against Ole Miss for the Frozen Egg Bowl. This is the highest collegiate ice hockey attendance record held in Mississippi. With this many cowbells ringing, the “Maroon – White” trademark chant is nearly drowned out, creating one of the most electric atmospheres many of our players and fans have ever been a part of. An opportunity to perform in front of a fan base this large is rarely a possibility outside of semi-professional and NCAA levels of play.
